Changes and improvements: Faster load times, reorganized and clear gift tables, and easier exports await you in New Portal.

The 2022 Planned Giving Report
|
|
We’re thrilled to share our fourth annual Planned Giving Report: an in-depth analysis of the most important trends in planned giving over the past year.
We hope it gives you a better picture of donor demographics – including who is donating, how much they’re donating, and the causes they give to. Read ahead for the key findings from the report:
-
Online will-making is mainstream. People of every demographic are using online tools to create their estate plans, with a 28% increase in the number of will-makers.
→ make sure you’re providing a way for your supporters to make a bequest to your organization online.
-
More donors are choosing to share their information. 67% of will-makers including bequests in their estate plan shared their information with the nonprofit beneficiary.
→ be sure you’re providing an opportunity for your donors to share their information, and provide a reason for doing so.
-
Giving dollar amounts are up. There was a 63% increase in the total sum of charitable gift bequests from the previous year – nearly $2.5 billion.
→ ensure your stewardship plans go above and beyond to retain wealthy donors.

Introducing our new Nonprofit Training Lead
|
|
Please join us in welcoming Lauren Winther-Hansen into her new role as Nonprofit Training Lead! Lauren previously worked directly with a portfolio of FreeWill partners as a Senior Partner Success Strategist.
We sat down with Lauren so that you could get to know her better:
What is your professional background?
I was Associate Director of Planned Giving for 11.5 years at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I revitalized a semi-dormant program and was an internal advocate for developing an outreach strategy around non-cash donations like gifts of stock and QCDs. I was also a FreeWill partner for 15 months! It was one of the best vendor relationships I’ve had.
What inspires you about working with FreeWill’s partners?
Nonprofit staff are passionate, committed humans who are often overwhelmed and under-resourced. Their work is not easy. I know, I’ve been in their shoes! It’s deeply rewarding to help them reach their goals. That’s my ikigai.
What should partners be excited about for the future of FreeWill’s partner trainings?
I envision a comprehensive curriculum that helps nonprofit fundraisers develop comfort and confidence in discussing planned and non-cash gifts with donors. They will also include information about our latest experiments, research, best practices, outreach strategies, and industry trends. Please email training@freewill.com with your questions, ideas, and suggestions!
What is the best thing about the city you live in?
In a word, Annapolis is charming. The historic downtown – with its waterfront, colonial buildings, and winding streets – is so lovely.

Upcoming donor training
To support your end-of-year giving efforts, we’ve developed a training for donors on “How Stock Giving Benefits You.” In this session, your donors will learn more about the many benefits of donating appreciated securities to charity — and how it can support both their finances and your mission.
