JULY 2026

The Giving USA 2026 Report, and what it means for you

Giving USA released its 2026 report on 2025 charitable giving, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy tapped FreeWill co-CEO Patrick Schmitt for perspective on what it means.

What's in the report?

The report shows that bequests had the largest growth of any giving source this year. Conversely, foundation giving declined from last year's record highs, though the longer-term trend remains positive. Individual giving is concentrating at the top, with larger gifts coming from fewer, wealthier donors.

A few numbers from the report worth sitting with:

  • Total giving hit a record in 2025 with $617.2 billion
  • Bequests grew nearly 20% in 2025, the third double-digit jump in the last four years
  • Individual giving has fallen from 80% of all dollars in 1985 to just 64% today

In short? The data suggests the Great Wealth Transfer may already be underway.

What does it mean for me?

Patrick recently unpacked what the report indicates for nonprofits, and how you can adjust your fundraising strategy to make the most of the learnings. Watch this webinar recording for practical next steps for turning this moment into planned gifts.
